Forbidden Planet is an iconic science fiction film released in 1956. Robby the Robot made his first appearance on screen in this film. Robby is widely considered to be one of the first, if not the first depiction of a robot with actual personality attributes in a substantial film role.

Misleadingly, the posters used to advertise the film, show Robby holding an unconscious women, suggesting Robby is an evil mechanical menace. However, no such scene exists in the film and instead Robby plays a benevolent and witty character.
