Gear robots literally refers to toy robots with visible gears. Normally these gears are shown through a transparent window, panel or dome and clustered into a small group. They are often brightly coloured and purely for aesthetics. In other words, they have no practical use apart from looking cool. Any gears that control other motion like the legs or arms usually remain hidden.
