Smoking toy robots have a unique feature that enables them to produce puffs of innocuous smoke. This dramatic feature simulates the exhaust fumes of a fire and coal powered internal engine, or at least the one that you secretly imagine powers these mechanical marvels. The mechanism works using soft wadding that is lightly coated in oil. The oily ball often has a wick that is heated via a filament (coiled electrical wire), similar to a light bulb. Smoke is produced when the oil temperature rises and bellows are used to billow / blow the smoke out. Smoke usually exits a robot via its mouth, head or chest area. If the smoking action stops it’s usually because the wadding has dried out and needs a replenishment of oil; vegetable oil works best.
